How do degree equivalent apprenticeships work?

Degree equivalent apprenticeships are a full-time job and so our apprentices work a 40 hour week, Monday to Friday, and they study for their professional qualifications in their spare time.

This means that you’ll get the benefits of gaining degree-level qualifications and on-the-job experience working in a professional environment.

And because it’s a full-time job, you’ll earn a wage too, normally starting at £25,000 per year.

Do apprentices pay tuition fees?

No, Telford Mann cover all the costs of your training and so if you are prepared to put in the effort to study and pass your exams, essentially you’re getting a free degree equivalent professional qualification.

Is a degree equivalent apprenticeship better than university?

Both have benefits and will land you jobs in the future. However, some might argue that degree  equivalent apprenticeships are better than university because you’re earning while learning. So, by the time you qualify as a Chartered Financial Planner, you’ll have tons of industry skills that employers would fight tooth and nail for and which therefore makes you valuable.

And with a hefty amount of money in your bank account…

You earn bonuses for passing exams and as your knowledge and experience builds, your salary will rise too, as a fully qualified Chartered Financial Planner you could be earning a basic salary of £50,000 per year.

This steep increase in earnings reflects the fact that you will be working full-time and studying in the evenings and on your days off. It’s not an easy ride, but the steep learning curve benefits you as a Chartered Financial Planner in becoming qualified as part of the top 20% of financial advisers.

On the other hand, going to university could allow you to achieve the following:
  • Study for a degree which could help you get the job you want.
  • You will be taught by well-respected academics who can help you learn.
  • You could make new friends, learn to look after yourself and improve your social life.
  • You can join clubs and societies, as well as having access to placement and work experience opportunities, which will all enrich you as a person.
  • You’ll be in control of your time and your learning, meaning you can focus on what interests you most.

However, university is an expensive business. The average university student pays a minimum of £9,250 a year in tuition fees, meaning they graduate with thousands of pounds in debt.

On the other hand, a degree apprenticeship gives you invaluable work experience, a university degree, and a monthly wage, saving you thousands of pounds on university fees.

On the fence? Check out some pros and cons of degree equivalent apprenticeships below:

Hear from some of the Apprentices

I joined Telford Mann shortly after my A-Levels, having turned down a place at a top 10 university. I accepted an offer to learn on the job at Telford Mann instead, undertaking professional qualifications which were fully funded by the firm. Had I chosen to proceed with a degree at university, I would’ve graduated in 2016 with a large amount of student debt, instead I gained a significant amount of knowledge and skills during my first three years at Telford Mann. With the firm’s ongoing support, I qualified as a Chartered Financial Planner in 2017.

Charlie Hancock

Having decided that I didn’t want to go to university, I joined Telford Mann when I was 19 with no previous experience in an office setting, let alone the finance industry. My first role was Operations Assistant and over the last 13 years, Telford Mann have paid for all my exams and I am now a Chartered Financial Planner and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Insurers. My current role is Head of Client Service at Telford Mann, looking after our 3,500 clients. Whilst developing my career I have been able to study and obtain internationally recognised qualifications, earning a competitive salary with no student debt.

Sam Matcham

After working in the financial sector for a few years I wanted to take my career to another level. I joined Telford Mann in 2021 because they offered me the opportunity to obtain a qualification whilst earning a salary and gaining experience, all at the same time.
3 years later I have been awarded my diploma and I am working towards chartership. The help and support provided by Telford Mann has helped me greatly in achieving this and developing my career.
